The Asian-African Legal Consultative Organisation (AALCO) is the only intergovernmental organisation in Asia and Africa and has been a significant force in international law and international arbitration development since its inception in 1956, as a major outcome of the first Asia and Africa Conference held in Bandung in 1955 (the Bandung Conference).
AALCO has 49 member states (including China), comprising major countries in Asia and Africa (over 90% of which are active participants of the Belt & Road Initiative), which are home to two-thirds of the world's population with combined GDPs exceeding US$26 trillion.
With the support of the 49 member states of AALCO and the hosting country, the People's Republic of China, and the Government of the Hong Kong SAR, AALCO-HKRAC has been functioning as AALCO's sixth regional arbitration centre in the world and the first one in North Asia — the first and only arbitration institution with international organisation status operating in Hong Kong.
